101 Introduction to Early Childhood Education

This course will explore
the historical and philosophical foundations of the care and schooling
of young children, ages 0-8. Attention will be given to current
practices and concerns regarding young children. Career options
in ECE will be explored and discussed. Personal characteristics
suitable for the profession will be reviewed. Available online.

150 Field Experience - 1 credit
(prerequisite: ECE 101) |
This course is designed to provide early childhood education students the
opportunity to develop their observation skills in an early childhood environment. The
experience is directly connected to the content of ECE 101 Introduction to Early Childhood.
Students will spend one hour per week in specified areas of the center.

200 Language Acquisition and Development - 3
credits |
Theories of language
development and the impact of language development on learning are
explored. The relationship between oral language and literacy
development is investigated. Process of acquiring a second
language, the impact of a second language and methods for enhancing
the development of both languages (particularly indigenous languages)
are examined.

240 Child, Family & Community Relations - 3 credits |
This course is designed to integrate the diverse environments and relationships in
which children develop the interactions that take place within and between those environments. The need
for strategies of eggective communication, the identification of family systems and dynamics, and the
relationship in which parents and professionals work together as an instructional team will be stressed.
This course will include a comprehensive look at parent teacher conferences, home visits, parent education,
families in the classroom and the foundations of a successful partnership.

251 Infant/Toddler Practicum I - 2 credits
(Concurrent: ECE 261) |
Supervised experience opportunities allow students to apply information from
ECE courses in an infant/toddler education setting. Learners are required to
complete 45 guided practicum hours. Schedules are coordinated with the Early
Childhood Center. Students meet with instructor and cooperating teachers on
a weekly basis to discuss progress and issues.

(Concurrent: ECE 262) |
Provides supervised experience opportunites for students to apply information from
ECE courses in an age 3-8 educational setting. Students complete 45 guided practicum
hours at the Early Childhood Center. Students meet with instructor and cooperating
teachers on a weekly basis to discuss progress and issues.

Students will practice responsive caregiving to address the needs of infants
and toddlers. Students will apply developmental theories to group care while
respecting the child's individuality.

(Concurrent: ECE 252) |
Students explore and practice the content and outcomes appropriate in an ECE
environment. Play-based curriculum, designed for the whole child in the areas
of physical, cognitive, emotional and social development are emphasized.

Students explore principles of child development and developmentally appropriate
practices related to children's behavior. Strategies for guiding behavior and the
relationship between development, children's behavior, culture and the environment
are presented.
